Decorating With Fabric

By Maria Palma

Fabric is a basic element in decorating and something in which we have a myriad of choices. There are several factors involved in choosing fabric for your home including the room's usage, family profile, color and budget and style.

First and foremost you will want to choose a theme for the room you are decorating:

LIVELY - bright, solid colors in cotton fabrics; big abstract patterns; or earth-toned fabrics

INDOOR GARDEN - floral fabrics; green and red silks, cotton; silk blends

URBAN CONTEMPO - solid colored neutrals, geometric patterns, chenille, linen, cotton, or leather

TRADITIONAL - brocades, velvet, damask, taffeta

Once you decide on the theme for your room you will need to choose a key fabric that will serve as the base fabric for the room. The other fabrics that complement the base fabric should have at least one of the main fabric's colors in their pattern. Avoid using too many different patterns in one room. Instead, try mixing solids with print patterns for a diverse look. There should also be a mix of smooth and rough textured fabrics for added interest. It's also a good idea to take a sample of the main fabric with you when shopping for coordinating fabrics and accessories.

Happy Decorating!
